FREE YOUTUBE TOOL

YouTube Thumbnail Extractor

Get the highest available public thumbnails (maxres). Creators can upload 4K — this tool extracts what YouTube actually serves.

Supports watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed & raw IDs.
Highest public size is maxresdefault (normally 1280×720). True 4K files are not yet on the public CDN.

Thumbnail Reality Check (2026)

Upload vs What You Can Download

Creators can upload custom thumbnails up to 3840×2160 (4K) (JPG/PNG, ≤50 MB on desktop). YouTube uses that high-resolution original to generate the public sizes.

What the public CDN actually serves:
• maxresdefault.jpg / .webp → almost always 1280×720 (occasionally 1920×1080 on older videos)
• sddefault → 640×480
• hqdefault → 480×360 (always available)
• mqdefault → 320×180

There is currently no public uhddefault.jpg, 4kdefault.jpg or similar endpoint. This tool detects the real pixel dimensions of every image so you always know exactly what you received.

FAQ

Can I get a true 4K thumbnail?+
Not via the public CDN. YouTube lets creators upload 4K, but only serves maxresdefault (normally 1280×720) and the smaller sizes publicly. This tool always shows the real pixel dimensions of the file you receive.
Why does Max Resolution sometimes fail?+
maxresdefault is only generated for HD+ uploads or custom thumbnails. Older or low-resolution videos simply don’t have it. The tool marks unavailable cards automatically.
Does it support WebP / JPEG XL?+
WebP is fully supported (via /vi_webp/). JPEG XL is not yet offered by YouTube’s thumbnail CDN; the code is structured so new formats can be added easily when they appear.
Do I need an account or API key?+
No. Everything runs client-side against YouTube’s public image CDN.
